Dr Emma Derrett-Smith started work in the scleroderma unit as a house officer with Professor Black in 2000, having completed her medical school training at the Royal Free. She trained in general medicine, specialising in rheumatology and worked intermittently at the scleroderma unit with Professor Denton throughout. She has now completed her rheumatology training and continues to work in the scleroderma clinic and other clinics specialising in connective tissue diseases.
During this time, she has completed a period of laboratory-based research leading towards a PhD in scleroderma vascular disease, supported by a clinical research fellowship from Arthritis Research UK and supervised by Professor Denton and Professor Abraham. She is currently working under a further grant from Arthritis Research UK to continue her laboratory research into pulmonary arterial hypertension in scleroderma.
