Xu Shiwen is Clinical Scientist and Honorary Senior Lecturer of the Centre for Rheumatology and Connective Tissue Diseases at the Royal Free and UCL Medical School. He has a PhD in Medicine at UCL. He was research fellow at the Kennedy Institute for Rheumatology in London, and then moved to UCL to the Rheumatology and Connective Tissue Diseases at the Hampstead campus as a Clinical scientist. He was a visiting research scientist at Institute of Cancer Research in the London, Department of Medical and Physiological Chemistry at Uppsala University in the Sweden and Fibrogen Research Laboratories in the USA.
His research studies have centred on the investigation of the human autoimmune disease systemic sclerosis. His research interests focus on the role of tissue fibroblasts and fibroblast-derived growth factors in fibrosis. As a major part of this work he performs cell biology studies using primary tissue fibroblasts and utilise a number of technologies to analyses fibroblast activity and function.
